Birthdays and Anniversaries

Today two great things took place. One, it was my nephew’s 4th birthday party, and second it is my 6th wedding anniversary. Six years ago I said “I Do” to the most wonderful man I have ever met. We were fortunate enough to get married at the Stanley Hotel in a beautiful, regal, turn-of-the-century type tea party. Everything about that day was magical. We decided to make it a point every year to go to the Stanley to celebrate our anniversary….except for this year.

This year marked a different type of anniversary. We spent the day with family and friends honoring the birth of my wonderful nephew in a sugar-hazed, kid-filled, frenzied kid’s museum. My sister who is an excellent party thrower did not disappoint, and we all took in the pleasure of enjoying sandwiches, cup cakes, and delighted in watching him oooh and  ahhh over every new gift that he opened. Idan thoroughly had a wonderful time, but by the end of the day was completely over stimulated by all the new sights and sounds (at one point we went down to the baby area and put him in a rocking, leaf thing where he just stared at the hanging mobiles on the ceiling for 20 mins…I feel that way when I go to Wal-Mart for too long).

After the party my husband carted up our son and took the long trek back from Denver to our home. All weekend I was stressing out about making our anniversary “special” and making sure we had a “special” dinner…when it dawned on me. I don’t need to go to the place where we got married every year to make it special. I don’t need a fancy dinner, fancy gift or fancy outing to make it feel like an anniversary. All I need in life is to surround myself with people that I love and who bring me joy. And today was that kind of day. Today was the perfect anniversary because my husband and I got to take our beautiful son to a museum, eat good food, engage in good conversation and laughter and enjoy the life that we helped merged together 6 years ago. Today was the perfect anniversary because my husband and I were able to reflect on the last 6 years and everything that we have endured in our marriage. And as we sat there at our table eating our take-out calzones, we both agreed that this anniversary was different because for the first time we felt like we didn’t have to make it an extravaganza, and that made it feel like a real marriage.

Oh, I will write about what we got each other for presents…tomorrow when I go pick it up at the store!

To my husband, I have loved you with every breath I have taken, every stepped I have stepped since we met, and I will continue to be the love of your life, friend and wife for as long as you will have me. Happy Anniversary.
